Biography

I have a background in Medicine. I completed my postgraduate training in Medicine and acquired my membership with the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. I have since diversified into medical education. I have focused on my professional development while working as a medical educator. I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education. This was followed by a Postgraduate Diploma and then a Masters in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety (HSP).I lead a team of simulation facilitators in Sligo Medical Academy. We deliver high quality Simulation Based Education (SBE). This is in addition to delivering curriculum via small group lectures, case based learning sessions and bedside teaching. I am adept at formative assessment, mentoring students along the way. I have a leading role in pastoral care. I contribute greatly to all aspects of summative assessments. I have developed and lead a programme of Inter-Professional Education (IPE) via simulation at a postgraduate level in Sligo University Hospital.Overall, I am a passionate medical educator who not only imparts knowledge but also inspires, guides and mentors her students to develop to their full potential; academically as well as professionally.

Research Interests

I have focused on my professional development to date. I started out in my current role as 0.5 FTE. This was so I could focus on my own education and development as well as pursue a teaching career. To achieve this goal, I firstly concentrated on appearing for and succeeding in my membership exam for the RCPI. This was followed by obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology. A personal interest in Dermatology was the basis for pursuing this qualification. Having achieved this goal, I successfully expanded my teaching role to 1.0 FTE. I acquired further qualifications such as a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education, a Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety (HSP) and a Masters (MSc) in HSP. I had little time to pursue original research outside of these qualifications. The thesis for my Masters degree however, focused on a subject that is very dear to me, Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, (EDI) in medical education. I carried out a systematic review of literature focusing on whether the concepts of EDI were taught via simulation at an undergraduate level, and if they were, what was the impact. My research findings showed an almost 100% positive impact of EDI teaching via simulation. I successfully submitted an abstract for a poster exhibition at the 24th Annual Multidisciplinary Health Research Conference, incorporating the 2nd Early-Stage Health Researcher Forum. This conference invites relevant and innovative research from a national level. I also presented my findings at the same conference. I am in the process of finalizing my thesis forPublic - No restrictionation to the The Clinical Teacher. I would like to carry out further research about the impact of Inter-professional simulation in postgraduate training. Furthermore, my interest in EDI in medical education still stands particularly in the area of providing EDI training via simulation in undergraduate medical education.
