Biography

Dr. Bryan McCabe graduated in 1997 with a first class Honours Degree (and Gold Medal) in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering from Trinity College Dublin (TCD). He was awarded his PhD entitled The behaviour of pile groups in Belfast soft clay by TCDin 2002. In Sept. 2001, following a year as a contract lecturer at TCD, Bryan joined the Department ofCivil Engineering at NUI Galway as a permanent lecturer in geotechnical engineering. He served a three year term as Head of Civil Engineering from 2014 to 2017 and was promoted to Senior LecturerAssociate Professorin 2017.Bryan was awarded a Presidents Award for Teaching Excellence at university level in 2012 and a College of Science and Engineering Teaching Excellence Award in 2023. He has supervised 8 PhD and 7 MEngScMApplSc students to completion, and is currently supervising 2 PhD students. He has published 55 papers in international journals, three of which received awards from the Institution of Civil Engineers in the U.K.. Bryanis also a Chartered Engineer (2006) and a Fellow (2014) of Engineers Ireland.

Research Interests

Bryan has a broad range ofresearch interests within geotechnical engineering, including piled foundations, ground improvement (Vibro-Replacement stone columns, dry soil mixing), microtunnellingpipe-jacking for utility pipelines and soft ground engineering (including peat).As of August 2024, Bryan has published 55 papers ininternational peer-reviewed journals, 60 papers in national and international peer-reviewed conferences and secured 1.3m in direct research funding. Three of the journal papers, published inInstitution of Civil Engineers (ICE) journals, were recognised with prestigious awards in recent years(Crampton Prize, 2010; Telford Premium Prize, 2013 and 2017). He has supervised 8 PhD and7 MEngScstudents to completion and is currently supervising 2 PhD students.He has also acted as a reviewer for several leading international journals. Four of Bryans PhD studentsgraduates have represented Ireland at either European or International versions of the Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference (YGEC) series.

Teaching Interests

Bryan has sole responsibility for geotechnical engineering instruction at NUI Galway. He was awarded a NUI Galway Presidents Award for Teaching Excellence in 2012. He is a very strong advocate of active learningand is an exponent of flipped learning in some ofhis classes.Bryan also hosted and chaired the international conference Shaking the Foundations of Geo-engineering Education (SFGE 2012), an initiative of ISSMGE Technical Committee 306 for which he has served as Secretary since 2010.Bryan is currently serving as External Examiner for Bachelors programmes in Civil Engineering at Cork Institute of Technology, a Masters of Engineering in Sustainable Development at Dublin Institute of Technology.
