Brendan Flynn was appointed within the School as a lecturer in 1998. He has studied at the University of Essex for his Masters and PhD degrees, his doctoral thesis having the title: Subsidiarity and the Evolution of EU environmental policy, with Prof. Albert Weale, as his supervisor. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate courses on topics in the areas of Irish politics, introduction to politics, and European Politics. He has also offered specialist third option courses in Environmental Policy and EU policy. His primary research interests include comparative environmental policy, with a special focus on EU and Irish developments. He also retains an interest in wider EU policy and European politics developments. He is the author of The Blame Game: Rethinking Irelands Sustainable Development and Environmental Performance (2007, Dublin: Irish Academic Press). Teaching SP158 Introduction to Politics amp; Sociology (semester 1)SP216 European Politics (semester 1)SP3116 Ocean and Marine Politics (semester 1)SP721 Ocean and Marine Politics (semester 2 including to Marine Science Students) Research InterestsIresearch environmental policy, with a focus on EU and Irish developments but increasingly am interest in marine security and linking with environment, the policy issues raised by marine renewables.I have also written, or researched, on the interactions between agriculture, fisheries and environmental policies. I was Principal Investigator for the Marine Institute funded Fishers Knowledge project (2009-2013). This research project explored how more sustainable fishing practices could be discovered in collaboration with fishers themselves. I was principal investigator on the EPA funded EPIIC project on Environmental Policy Integration Innovation and Change (2017).

I am heavily involved in the undergradute teaching programme of the School. In particular I do the first few weeks of the 1st year introductory course, SP158, focusing on Political Parties. In Second year I teaching the mandatory module SP216 European Politics-a larger class with circa 300 students. In final year, I offer two small group optional courses, SP3116 Ocean and Marine Politics in semester 1and SP721 Ocean and Marine Politics (since 2013) in semester 2. The latter courses has, since 2014, been offered to 4th Year Marine Science undergraduates as well. In addition I teach a weekly SP160 seminar, and a weekly 2nd year (general) seminar per semester.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
