The Back Alleys of Democracy: The Dirty War against ETA in Film: Lasa eta Zabala: The back alleys of democracy: the dirty war against ETA in film, Lasa eta Zabala In 2014 the Basque film Lasa eta Zabala premiered in Spain with a considerable degree of expectation. The title refers to the tragic case of two young Basque activists exiled in the French side of the Basque Country who disappeared without a trace for years. The events happened in 1983, but their bodies were not identified until 12 years later. The forensic analysis of the bones showed clear evidence of brutal torture and murder and opened the can of worms known as the Dirty War, carried out against the Basque separatist organisation ETA, which would involve high ranking members of the Guardia Civil (police force with military status) and of the Spanish government at the time, sometimes acting on French soil under the blind eye of the French authorities.
