Biography

Beatriz Pérez-Pérez is an MSCA-PREPARED Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Disability Law and Policy (CDLP) at the University of Galway. Her research focuses on the intersection of human rights, madness, disability, mental health, and care policies, employing a range of methodologies grounded in the humanities and social sciences. In particular, her work engages with Foucauldian and feminist genealogy, as well as action research and qualitative approaches—including ethnography, reflective communities, case studies, and in-depth interviews—and is informed by critical disability studies, mad studies, gender studies, and decolonial studies.

Beatriz holds a PhD in Individual and Society in the Contemporary World from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). She has previously worked as a Lecturer in Social Psychology at the University of Vic—Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) and as a researcher at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) on the CUSAM Project (Women Carers of People Diagnosed with Severe Mental Disorders: Challenges for Democratic and Collective Care), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Equality. She has also participated in and coordinated other qualitative research projects focused on promoting the radical transformation of mental health services from human rights and gender perspectives, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Her postdoctoral project, Advancing Feminist/Disability/Mad Justice in Human Rights-Based Care and Support Systems (FeMaDis-J), funded by the MSCA-PREPARED Cofund Project, addresses the challenge of building integrated human rights-based care and support systems, tackling the international gap between gender- and disability-specific solutions. The project seeks to ensure that the global care agenda and the emerging right to care evolve as a disability-inclusive response. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining Foucauldian genealogy, citizen science practices, and poststructuralist feminist policy analysis.

As part of her activism, Beatriz serves as a Research Officer at the NGO ActivaMent Catalunya Associació, a user-led organisation run by psychiatrised persons (or persons with psychosocial disabilities). Within this organisation, she has coordinated several collective human rights advocacy initiatives based on the CRPD, including the ActivaMent–Hierbabuena Coalition Alternative Report on Spain for the 21st Session of the CRPD Committee.
