Personal profile

Biography

I am Professor of Pharmacy and Head of the Pharmacy Discipline within the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Galway.

I lead the academic strategy and long-term development of the MPharm, with responsibility for curriculum architecture, regulatory assurance and strategic partnership development. With over a decade of experience in UK higher education, I have held senior leadership roles including Course Director of the MPharm with Preparatory Year and Director of Innovation. I am a pharmacist by training and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

My research is translational and internationally recognised in ocular therapeutics and medical devices. I develop intraocular lenses, ophthalmic biomaterials and ocular drug delivery systems engineered to meet defined clinical requirements in cataract and refractive surgery. I am the named inventor on multiple international patents in ocular medical devices, reflecting sustained innovation at the interface of pharmaceutics, materials science and vision science.

My broader work spans biomaterials, pharmaceutics and tissue engineering, aligning with CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices, and the Galway MedTech ecosystem in regenerative medicine and healthcare technologies.

I maintain an active focus on innovation and enterprise, having completed the Ignite, Pre-Accelerator and Accelerator programmes at Cambridge Judge Business School. This underpins my approach to disciplined translation, structured clinical collaboration and commercial pathways that move validated science into healthcare practice.
