Teaching Interests

My philosophy as a teacher is based on several key concepts that I try apply to my teaching practice: creation of a positive learning atmosphere; early identification of each learners needs; a sincere commitment to the teaching process; availability and approachability; providing honest and constructive feedback; and encouraging personal excellence in my learners. I believe in preplanning and preparation of educational opportunities to the extent possible in order to maximize educational opportunities and optimize the learning experience for each student. My best experiences as a learner came from enthusiastic, caring teachers who were eager to share their knowledge and clinical experiences with a sense of excitement. I try to replicate these qualities in my teaching roles. I have a longstanding passion for and commitment to teaching, and have been fortunate to gain teaching experience in a variety of settings, from 1:1 bedside and small group teaching to medical and allied health students, to seminars and lectures to colleagues and other healthcare professionals. I have acted as an undergraduate medicine tutor at the University of Toronto and also at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I have also taught postgraduate residents in the family practice environment, both in the office and in patients homes, in both Ireland and Canada. I am a teachersupervisor on the UT Medicine Faculty home visiting resident program. In a prior role at NUI Galway, I have been involved in assessment of learning, as an OSCE assessor in an undergraduate medicine program. I have experience of teaching healthcare professionals from other disciplines, most notably in my role as a clinical fellowship in community Dermatology at Womens College Hospital. I have contributed to community nurse teaching programs and to teaching programs for Nurse practitioner in wound care. I am dedicated to, and proud of, my role and commitment to my teaching responsibilities - and that is a commitment to excellence. I take great pride in watching my learners develop their clinical skills, knowledge base and critical thinking. To help guide students to find their own goals, interests and career path in Medicine is deeply rewarding. I thrive in the opportunity to see students become nurturing, caring physicians with sound skills and judgment as they develop both the art and science behind clinical excellence. I view teaching as an opportunity to expose and educate students around some of the important roles of the Family Physician, and sometimes spark the learners interest in a career in this most rewarding of clinical disciplines. I feel my work as a clinical teacher gives me a powerful and real opportunity to mentor tomorrows healthcare professionals. Good teachers and educators motivate their students to achieve their fullest potential. Its important to challenge each student effectively without causing them to lose confidence. As educators, we are a trusted guide and advisor, relied upon to provide the examples of excellence. I easily remember my best educators and appreciate the influence they had on the physician I am today.
