Biography
Dr. Angela O’Dea is Senior Lecturer in Human Factors, Patient Safety and Simultion at the University of Galway. Dr O'Dea is a Co Director on the Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety. Dr O'Dea is a research lead at the Irish Centre for Applied Patient Safety and Simulation (ICAPSS). She is a member of the board of the College of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee. Dr O'Dea is also member of the G31 Curriculum Development Working Group at the School of Medicine at University of Galway. Previously Dr O'Dea was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Surgical Affiars at The Ryoyal College of Surgeons Ireland where she lead the delivery of the Masters in Human Factors in Patient Safety and was part of the faculty team responsible for deliversing the Human Factors training to doctors in training. Previous to this Dr. O'Dea was an Associate Profesor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California where she was the Chair of the University's Research Ethics Board. Dr. O'Dea worked as a Senior Researcher at Klein Associates in Dayton Ohio where she worked on various research and impliementation projects within high risk industries and the military. By background Dr O'Dea is a research psychologist and human-factors specialist whose work focuses on decision-making, safety, teamwork, and patient safety in complex environments such as healthcare, the military, and high-risk industries. Over a career spanning more than two decades, she has contributed to research and education on human factors, organisational safety, and clinical simulation, helping to improve how professionals make decisions and manage risk in critical settings.
Research Interests
Dr. O’Dea has published widely in fields related to human factors, healthcare safety, and organisational psychology. Major themes in her work include: human factors in healthcare, decision making, situation awareness and leadership in high risk industries, non-technical skills in healthcare teams, safety culture and organisational behaviour, healthcare simulation including simulation based education and translational simulation.
Teaching Interests
Dr O'Dea leads the patient safety curriculum in the University of Galway undergraduate medical curriculm. She is course leader on a range of simulation, research methods and human factors course on the Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Healthcare simulation and patient safety. Doctor O'Dea provdes guest lectures in Human Factors and quality improvment and professionalism at RCSI and RCPI.
