Chromatin is the packaging of genomes in eukaryotes. We investigate the structure and function of chromatin at the molecular level using biochemical and bioinformatics techniques. We wish to understand how chromatin is dynamically remodelled during processes such as gene activation and DNA repair.

Personal profile

Biography

Dr Andrew Flaus is a lecturer in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of Galway in Ireland.

He is an active researcher in the fields of chromosome biology and protein structure-function. He is also an enthusiastic teacher in biotechnology and biochemistry with strong academic interests in internationalisation and teaching technologies.

Dr Flaus completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in his native New Zealand in 1990, and then a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biophysics from the Swiss Federal Institute of technology in Zurich (ETHZ) in 1996 under Prof Tim Richmond. He then completed a postdoc at ETHZ until 1999 when he moved to work with Prof Tom Owen-Hughes in University of Dundee, Scotland including funding from EMBO and Human Frontiers fellowships. Dr Flaus took up to a faculty position at the then National University of Ireland Galway in 2006, renamed to University of Galway in 2023.

Dr Flaus was programme director for BSc Biotechnology degree from 2010-2015, and continues as year 1-2 coordinator. He served as vice dean for internationalisation in the College of Science and Engineering from 2015-2023.

Research Interests

Dynamic structure and function of nucleosomes, the basic building blocks of chromosomes. Mechanism of ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling enzymes. Biochemical techniques for probing protein-DNA interactions. Bioinformatic analysis of chromatin components. Protein stucture-function relationships.

Teaching Interests

Use of innovative technologies to enhance teaching and support student learning. Introducing novel international dimensions into student learning experiences. Development of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives related to internationalisation such as refugee educational pathways. Integration of employment-relevant perspectives and skills for graduates.
