Overview of our Research

The School of Education at the University of Galway is committed to research that drives equity, innovation, and transformative change in education. The School of Education is comprised of two disciplines, the Discipline of Children’s Studies, and the Discipline of Education.  Rooted in interdisciplinary inquiry, our work spans early childhood to higher education, ensuring a societal impact through policy engagement, teacher education, and pedagogical advancement. Our work is deeply collaborative, spanning disciplines such as sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, anthropology, STEM, and digital education. We are dedicated to inclusive, evidence-based research that informs and shapes the future of education. 

Our vision is to: 

  • Champion social justice, equity, and inclusion in education. 
  • Explore culture, identity, and the evolving role of education in society. 
  • Drive innovation in pedagogy, teacher learning, and digital education. 
  • Engage with national and international stakeholders to shape impactful policy and practice. 

Our research aligns with three key themes: 1. Social Justice and Equity; 2. Pedagogy and Professional Learning; 3. Culture and Society.

1. Social Justice and Equity

This research theme examines systemic inequalities, diversity, and access in education, addressing barriers related to social class, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual identities, age, and (dis)ability. Key priorities include exploring educational disadvantage, youth civic engagement, inclusive learning environments, and policy analysis, alongside tackling anti-racism, gender equity, and decolonisation efforts.  

 2. Pedagogy and Professional Learning

This research theme focuses on teaching, learning, and professional development in diverse educational contexts, from early childhood to higher education. Key priorities include Teacher Professional Learning, STEM & Digital Education, Innovative Teaching Practices, and Policy and curriculum development. 

3. Culture and Society

This interdisciplinary theme explores the social, cultural, and historical dimensions of education, particularly focusing on childhood, youth, and identity. Key priorities include exploring youth agency, wellbeing, cultural representations of childhood, educational spaces, and the role of media and language in learning.

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
