Overview of our Research
The Ryan Institute is University of Galway’s largest research institute and the central home for environmental and wider sustainability research. We bring together researchers, students, professional staff and partners who are working to address some of the most urgent challenges of our time, from climate change and biodiversity loss to public health, food systems and sustainable energy. At its heart, the Institute is a space to collaborate, because no single discipline can meet the demands of the global challenges ahead.
Our vision is to lead transformative, transdisciplinary research that sustains the planet and serves the public good. We believe that today’s most pressing challenges require more than technical solutions. They require collaboration, courage and community, linking scientific discovery with policy, practice and public understanding so that everyone can benefit from a more sustainable future.
We organise our work across four interconnected thematic areas, Marine and Coastal, Energy and Climate Change, Agriculture and Bioeconomy, and Environment and Health. This cross-cutting framework brings together expertise from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities, enabling holistic approaches that move beyond traditional academic silos. More than 500 researchers and professional staff collaborate across these themes, working with partners in government, industry and civil society in Ireland and internationally.
Advancing excellent science with clear societal relevance is central to the Ryan Institute’s mission. Through interdisciplinary research, policy engagement and public collaboration, we connect evidence-based knowledge with real-world decision-making and community action. By drawing on internationally recognised expertise from across the University of Galway, the Institute helps ensure that research contributes to environmental sustainability, social wellbeing and a more resilient future for all.
