Overview of our Research

Italian at University of Galway is a dynamic and ambitious discipline, passionate about providing our students with language and intercultural skills, and engaging them in contemporary Italian culture.

Our staff has a wide range of expertise in various aspects of Italian language and culture from the 19th century to today. Our interests include comparative literary studies; literary translation; 19th Century Italian literature and civilization; 20th Century Italian literature and civilization; children’s literature; the history and culture of migration; audio-visual translation; language teaching methodologies; sociolinguistics and applied linguistics. Our staff have been awarded prestigious research grants at international and national level, such as the European Research Council Consolidator Grant and the Irish Research Council Laureate Award. Italian offers a variety of postgraduate options including a taught MA in Translation Studies, an MSc in Applied Multilingualism, as well as a Structured Ph.D.
