Overview of our Research

The Discipline of Gender and Women’s Studies  provides a distinctive theoretical framework, a diversity of research methods and a substantive focus driven by feminist theory, analyses and practice.

Grounded in a 30-year history of feminist academia and activism at University of Galway, Gender and Women’s Studies is committed to cross-disciplinary teaching and research that engages with current and historical inequalities and exclusions from a critical, reflexive ethos and intersectional perspective. Members of the Discipline bring expertise from across the fields of sociology, politics, economics, women’s history, international development, human rights, legal studies and the humanities more broadly. Working through collaborative practices, Gender and Women’s Studies is dedicated to understanding how the allocation of gender at birth based on sex, and the consequent hierarchical sex-gendered lives and experiences of people, creates and maintains inequalities, exclusions and oppressions throughout the world. Our core work contributes to a more equitable future through dedicated feminist scholarship, public engagement and activism.
