Organisation profile

Overview of our Research

Environmental Science excels in applied ecological research, benefiting from Europe's pristine ecosystems. Our research spans famous ecosystems like disappearing lakes, peatlands, flood meadows, and coastal grasslands. We focus on terrestrial invertebrates as bioindicators of habitat quality and ecosystem functions, including biological control, and study rare and protected species.

We welcome MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral research inquiries. Contact Professor Mike Gormally at [email protected].

Habitat Protection: We aim to develop sustainable habitat management strategies for farmed and forested areas to protect habitats and their invertebrate fauna.

Invertebrate Ecology: We study marsh flies, hover flies, and ground beetles as bioindicators and biocontrol agents, with a special interest in rare and protected species.

Humans & the Environment: We explore ways to improve human interaction with the environment in agriculture, forestry, climate change, health, and recreation.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 4 - Quality Education
  • SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water
  • SDG 15 - Life on Land
