Overview of our Research

The research interests of staff in the Discipline of English at the University of Galway are diverse and interdisciplinary. They span periods and methodologies from early manuscript studies and book history to performance and digital poetics. Key areas of focus include Chaucerian studies, early modern literature, women’s writing, masculinities, colonial and postcolonial literatures, print culture, travel writing, Victorian literature, theatre history, modernism, Irish writing, digital humanities, contemporary fiction, creative writing, and journalism. Researchers engage in individual and collaborative projects, contributing to a vibrant community of scholarship through seminars, conferences, and international collaborations.

Some of our staff specialize in Creative Writing and are accomplished writers and scholars who bring a wealth of experience to their teaching and mentorship. They offer courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the BA in English and Creative Writing and the MA in Writing. Their expertise spans various genres such as fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, and they actively engage in the literary community through publications, readings, and workshops. Students benefit from their guidance in developing their own creative voices and are encouraged to participate in literary events and collaborations.
