Half a million people in Ireland live with osteoporosis, survey finds

Press/Media

Description

New research has found that half a million people in Ireland live with osteoporosis.

The University of Galway led an international research team which has revealed that between 300,000 and 500,000 men and women in Ireland are living with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis causes bones to become brittle resulting in skeletal failure. Half of all women, and one in four men, aged 50 years and older will suffer an osteoporotic fracture before they die, the report said.

Academics and clinicians are now calling for an osteoporosis care programme to be put in place as a national priority.
