Description

Outreach. Lead. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charitable organization based in the United Kingdom and Ireland, dedicated to saving lives at sea. In Galway, specifically, the RNLI operates a lifeboat station to provide assistance and rescue services along the Galway Bay coastline. The Galway station is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteer crew members who are highly trained in various rescue techniques and safety procedures. These volunteers are vital in responding to emergency calls, conducting search and rescue operations, and providing assistance to those in distress at sea. Their commitment and bravery play a crucial role in keeping the waters around Galway safe. The RNLI Galway station not only serves as a rescue resource but also actively promotes sea safety through education and maritime hazard awareness campaigns. They strive to raise public awareness of the potential risks and dangers associated with water activities, encouraging responsible behavior, and ensuring people are well-prepared before heading out to sea. The Simulation Team have been collaborating with the RNLI for a number of years since one of their crew completed the Diploma in Health Care Simulation and Patient Safety at the University of Galway in 2019. Teh simulaiton team have provided the RNLI crew with simulation and clinical skills equipment and in 2023 began more formal training to support the crew. Bimonthly sessions are delivered in the RNLI base in Galway Bay and a simulated exercise relating to the topic is conducted. To illustrate, in May 2023 trauma, orthopaedic and plastic surgeons visited the base and discussed the immediate management of limb fractures, spinal trauma, burns, amputations and avulsions. A simulated trauma exercise was then conducted at sea. In July 2023, airway management was covered by an anaesthesiologist and intensive care nurse specialist and again an airway emergency exercise was conducted at sea. In Sept 2023 a planned visit by the crew to the Interprofessional Simulation Facility on the top floor of CSI will be held and they will meet the Emergency Medicine and Trauma Teams and observe some simulation activities.
