Description

Outreach. Speaker. Public Lecture, The Oslo Bloomsday Celebrations, Ibsen Museum, Oslo, Norway. Abstract: James Joyce had a great interest in the emerging form of the cinema in the early twentieth century, evident in his central involvement in the establishment of Irelands first designated movie theatre. This interest went well beyond this entrepreneurial venture, however, and is evident both in the style and content of his work. This presentation, which includes screenings of relevant film clips, considers the influence of the cinema, and early moving image technology such as the mutoscope, on Joyces fiction, in particular Ulysses.
